How to make that big shift in your life that you’ve been unsure about?
I hear over and over again from clients and friends and community alike: they are in a job that is unsatisfying…they want to try something new…they dream of something different. But some inertia (or rational thinking) tends to bring them back to staying where they are. It may be unsatisfying on some level, but it is stable. It’s what they know. What if nothing better comes or what if they are wrong about what they are feeling? …And the cycle continues.
Many of us have been conditioned to prioritize listening to our rational brain. It is how we are successful in school and in so many of our jobs. So when we get these messages from elsewhere, we often don’t notice them, or are unsure about how to listen or trust them. It feels risky or scary to listen to something else!
And here is where somatic coaching comes in
I have spent many years observing the somatic component of these experiences with people. This component is mostly below rational thinking. Someone is accessing a different type of information, message or intuition that continues to emerge over and over, even after it has been pushed away. We want to be curious about this! To relate to this in a new way, we try something new. Instead of solely talking it through, weighing pros and cons, cycling through what we know like we normally do, we make space to deeply listen to the information we are getting from our bodies.
So what does this actually mean?
We get quiet and start to notice subtle cues. That tug in our stomach when we think about staying put, the slight tension in our shoulders when we feel fear, the light that comes into our eyes and warmth in our cheeks when we start to picture something different…Everyone has these deep inner knowings and internal cues from their body that are unique to them. When we have room to listen and recognize what is here, these cues can become more clear signposts in guiding the decisions we are making. For some of us, we already are in relationship with these cues, just without even realizing it. So in this practice, there is a deep potency to be in choice around listening.
Engaging in somatic practices that help us learn how to recognize these body cues offers a number of benefits for people. One, we are able to follow through with choices that are aligned for us without waffling for months or years. Two, we trust ourselves and our bodies and knowings more and more. The first time you consciously follow a body cue, it can feel risky, unclear. But over time we begin to feel a sense of self-trust that can only come from deep, embodied listening.
If you are longing to feel more connected to these cues, your intuition and your self trust, somatic coaching can be a powerful support.
During transitional life moments such as a career change, exploring your identity or following your heart, somatic tools and practices can support you to learn how to deeply listen to yourself, understand your body’s cues and knowings in new ways and make choices with more ease and self trust.
